Supplying the Authentic
A few memories of a shopping trip to Manhattan, mid nineties, some cards collected from the then, relatively new Supreme, Stussy, Union and X Large. I guess at the time these stores were the holy grail of sreetwear and things seemed more exciting back then.

New website devoted to the original work pant, the Dickies 874.

So, after 15 months it's finally time for my Edwin Nashvilles to have their first wash. They have lived through beer spillage's, living with my 2 young daughters (and the dog) but this week- end a curry spillage means the inevitable. I know I'm going to regret it but washing them is the only option, this time fabreze and a good airing is not an option, and my trusty old denims will never be the same again.
I've had a new pair in waiting since before Christmas but as yet have not been able to bring myself to go through the initial 'bedding in' period an unavoidable and uncomfortable chore with any raw denim.
I know, having had plenty of pairs over the years, that the replacement pair will soon become my favourite denim but its always sad to lose something that has become my own custom fit.
Goodbye old friend........

Thoughts on utility /workwear.
Just a bit of an observation on utility /work wear that has rightly found its way out of the fields and factories and into our wardrobes. Our hosts here at The Original Store have a couple of American classics in Dickies (love those work pants) and Redwing, elsewhere you'll find the evergreen Carhartt.
What these and numerous other brands have in common is that they are functional,
hard wearing, good looking clothes designed for grafting in but which have been adapted and adopted by people round the world to fit in with their own lifestyles and fashion senses. http://www.dickies.net/ricky-powell/
Elsewhere, in the world of high fashion, we have a different kind of "work wear", jackets, pants and shirts with price tags way beyond the people whose clothing it seeks to emulate, check out this little lot, no change from a grand here. http://www.adamkimmel.com/lookbook/fall-winter-2008
It's not that my problem is all about the price, it's not, some of these clothes are exceptionally well made and will command big money but as somebody who gets grease under his finger nails don't tell me it's work wear.
Nearly finished but just had a thought about Belstaff, I got my first jacket in 1982 to keep me dry on my Lambretta, had the pants as well. Now here's something that started off as "real" utility wear for everyone who needed it and has ended up reborn in the "fashion utility"section with the relevant price tag and buyers, it is now owned I believe by the Prada group and no longer available in your local motorcycle shop.
In a bit,
John P

Nothing better than a fresh espresso first thing in the morning for that little kick start.
Thanks to our friends at Spine Magazine for providing us with their 10th anniversary coffee, nice idea.
Looking forward to a double espresso, loads of work to do, this will get me going!

Time to introduce our first Original Store blogger, John the Panel Beater, friend of the stars and all round aficionado on all things Original. You'll hearing a lot more of John in the months to follow, so now check out his Buzz Rickson user report........
I'd been after one of the Japanese vintage style sweatshirts for sometime and looked at many brands. I ended up choosing Buzz Rickson purely on the basis that the company was named after a character played by Steve McQueen and that alone would make it good ! First off, these are not the loose fitting, lightweight, fashion sweatshirts we've all become accustomed to. The body and sleeves are slim fitting by design and of course they have the all important deep waistband and cuffs (which I'm wearing turned up) of sweatshirts from the first half of the last century.
The construction is also from back in the day, the fabric is woven on "loopwheeler" looms which means a one piece tubular body with no seems at the sides. The machines themselves date from the 1920's and a different one is needed for each body size, they also run far slower than modern machines which obviously limits the amount of material and therefore sweatshirts that can be produced. I'm quite into the fact that these have been made on machinery and in a manner that was probably the norm seventy to eighty years ago, it gives the shirt a sense of history even though it is essentially a "replica".
I've been wearing this for just over six months now and it has become a favourite , it gets two or three outings a week and has been washed numerous times with no shrinkage and no loss of shape at all. I'm sure it could pass for a dead stock 1950's.
Anyway, I'm about to go out for a quiet beer on this cold , wet, Mancunian spring evening, better grab my sweatshirt. Do yourself a favour!
